YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A cruise ship employee responsible for stocking passenger minibars was sentenced in Newark today to 13 months in federal prison for sexually abusing a sleeping woman aboard a trip.
Karan Seechurn, 26, of Mauritius previously pleaded guilty to one count of abusive sexual contact, admitting that he used his pass kep to enter the woman’s room last Dec. 23 and then touched her as she slept.
The federal government has special maritime jurisdiction over sexual abuse cases, such as those that occur on cruise ships, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman noted.
Fishman credited special agents of the FBI with making the case that was presented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meredith Williams of his office.
In addition the prison term, U.S. District Judge Esther Salas sentenced Seechurn to one year of supervised release.
