The chief didn't go into details of the Daily Voice story -- including that the robber was armed with a machete when he jumped the counter of the Palisade Avenue bank and made off with nearly $50,000 around 3 p.m., according to a source with knowledge of the holdup.
Bendul did say, however, that the robber used "an edged weapon."
"Fort Lee PD is assisting the FBI, which is now the lead investigating agency," the chief wrote in a release, referring all inquiries to the bureau's Newark field office.
The area was temporarily closed to traffic and the bank remained on lockdown for several hours while FBI agents investigated. The Bergen County Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence.
