The events were at the Passaic Arts and Science Primary School and the Bergen Arts and Science Middle School in Garfield.
Recipients of this year’s Patriot Award include Nihat Guvercin, CEO, iLearn Schools; Durim Memedi, director, Passaic Arts and Science Primary School; Yunus Kul, director, Bergen Arts and Science Middle School; Sam Giovia, security supervisor; and Chris Cherubino, security supervisor.
iLearn Schools also have been nominated for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
This year’s iLearn Schools Patriot Award recipients were nominated by the school’s three active National Guardsmen: Sgt. Jessica Hunter, Sgt. Paris Glover and SP4. Matthew Barrington. The Patriot Award is awarded to bosses, supervisors or employers who support the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and reserves.
“iLearn Schools make it a specific focus to hire current and former members of the military,” Guvercin said. “While I am honored to receive the Patriot Award, the real honor is to work alongside our nation’s bravest soldiers.”
The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense office that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the reserves through outreach, recognition and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws and resolves employer conflicts between service members and their employers. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support Citizen Warriors through flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.
iLearn Schools (formerly North Jersey Arts and Science Charter Schools) is a non-profit Charter Management Organization that provides specialized educational and management services, including operational and administrative support, for schools.
Bergen, Passaic, Paterson and Hudson Arts and Science Charter Schools are four separate charter school districts operating under iLearn Schools.
