The resignation is effective Dec. 31, 2017. He requested to return as the high school principal in January 2018.

The board in March called an emergency meeting to discuss financial problems facing the district and vote on suspending the embattled superintendent. The vote ended in a tie: 5-5, and Koenig kept his job.

The school district has seen financial and performance difficulties the past few years -- and operated at a deficit for roughly eight.
