After the October death of longtime Mayor Richard Mola, many residents asked Dombrowski if he would run for the open seat, Dombrowski said in a statement.

At the time of his death, Mola, 80, had served 45 years as Mayor of Elmwood Park.

“Before I could commit to taking on such an immense task, I needed to know I would have dedicated individuals as my council running mates,” Dombrowski said.

Dombrowski has chosen residents Denise Ingui and Jeff Leider as his council running mates. Both Ingui and Leider are activists for their children who battle rare diseases.

The pair “have the desire and dedication to rebuild our great town, and are eager and beyond willing to put in the time and hard work,” he said.

“Our children and seniors a like, deserve a safe and stable community that isn’t afraid of progress,” Leider said. “We have a great community, but it has been neglected for far too long”

“Our residents deserve the same quality of life and services that other communities receive,” Ingui added.

“Entrusting us with the great responsibility of strengthening our community, we pledge to work hard on making Elmwood Park a great place to live,” Dombrowski said.

Dombrowski was first elected to the council in 2013. As a councilman, he pushed to merge municipal health services with Bergen County, saving $125,000 annually and advocated for rezoning to encourage business growth, and as council president, he helped deliver a 0 percent municipal tax increase in 2014.

Just last week, Dombrowski was sworn into his second term on the Elmwood Park Council. He garnered 4,435 votes in the November election, the highest for a council candidate in borough history.
