Officer Arthur Canestrino pulled over a 2010 Honda Civic on North 6th Street and Fairview Avenue late Wednesday morning for having tinted windows and no front license plate, Capt. Ammen Matari said.

Canestrino immediately smelled raw marijuana, which 21-year-old passenger Khadir Lindsey said was his, Matari said.

Lindsey had a cigarette filled with pot – along with a black plastic shopping bag in his pants that held the heroin envelopes, all stamped with a blue BMW emblem, said the captain, who responded to the scene.

Matari said he tried to handcuff Lindsey, who bolted.

Lindsey was quickly chased down and subdued, with help from Detective Walter Richmond and Officer Daniel Rinaldi, after a brief struggle, the captain said.

In the area of the car where he’d been sitting, Rinadli found a black bb gun wrapped in a red and white bandana, he said.

Police charged Lindsey with various drug and weapons offenses, as well as resisting arrest.

A judge ordered him held in the Passaic County Jail pending an initial appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Paterson. He remained held there without bail on Thursday.
