Prosecutor: Garfield Driver In Critical Pedestrian Crash Was Drunk

GARFIELD, N.J. – An auto sales representative from Garfield was drunk when his car struck a pedestrian Saturday night in Garfield, critically injuring him, said authorities who arrested the driver.

Patrick Maurikos, 65, was released by a judge following a detention hearing after being taken to the Bergen County Jail, records show.

Maurikos was charged with assault by auto and DWI after the 8:39 p.m. crash at Midland Avenue near Banta Avenue, Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Monday.

The male victim remained in critical but stable condition at Hackensack University Medical Center, he said.
