LODI, N.J. -- A Belleville man who Lodi police said carjacked a local driver and tried o break into an area gas station posted $25,000 bail and was released from the Bergen County Jail on Sept. 30 pending a court hearing, records show.
Lodi police were joined near the Rebar grill around 2:15 a.m. Sept. 27 by their Maywood and Rochelle Park colleagues in investigating the carjacking report, Lt. Robert Salerno said.
Around the same time, a burglary call came in from a Shell Station down the block on Essex Street, he said.
Rochelle Park Police Sgt. Doug Arendacs and Officer Ryan Burke grabbed Cresencio Hernandez-Taveras, 28, a short time later on westbound Route 80 near Riverview Avenue in Lodi, Salerno said.
They found that the 6-foot-1-inch, 185-pound Hernandez-Taveras got behind the wheel of the vehicle in the back of the restaurant and drove it about 50 feet before stopping, struggling with the owner and taking off on foot, the lieutenant said.
He was charged with carjacking, burglary and criminal mischief.
