The fire apparently broke out in the attic of the Route 4/Broadway landmark, responders said.

"Our Fire Department did a great job, as the fire was already through the roof when they arrived," Mayor John Cosgrove said just after 7 a.m. "All units are back in quarters and there were only two minor injuries to firefighters."

Both were treated at the scene by the Fair Lawn Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

Broadway westbound was closed to traffic and diverted onto Route 208, he said.

P.O. Javier Gutierrez was patrolling on Broadway when he spotted smoke just after 12:30 a.m., Metzler said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in an hour, although extensive damage was done for authorities to deem the building unsafe.
