Bergen's Top Law Enforcers Counsel Heirs In Their Careers

HACKENSACK, N.J. – More than 150 students – many of whom will pursue careers in law enforcement – were graduated last week from a unique program sponsored by the Bergen County sheriff and prosecutor.

The NJ Police Community Affairs Officers Association's 10-week Law Enforcement Career Development Course counsels college students interested in law enforcement careers.

The only program of its kind in the tri-state area, the course pairs professionals with more than 23 colleges and universities and has graduated more than 700 students, many of whom have gone on to law enforcement careers.

“We believe that this program is highly effective tool to help recruit a diverse professional workforce," said Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino, joined at the graduation ceremony by county Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal, among others.

“These are the faces of the future of law enforcement," Grewal said.

The course was led by law enforcement veteran William Schiavella, the sheriff’s director of communications, along with:

  • Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer Shelly Perez;
  • Leonia Police Officer Maria Perez;
  • Hackensack Police Officer Evelyn Reyes;
  • Hackensack Detective Travoun James;
  • Fairview Sgt. Joseph Bucco;
  • Hackensack Special Police Officer Keila Ynfante;
  • Port Authority NY/NJ Police Sgt. Lawanda Irving;
  • Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Chief Assistant Prosecutor Elizabeth Rebein.
