GARFIELD, N.J. -- Sophie Mizdol Ziemba (nee Koczwara), of Garfield, passed away Oct. 6. She was 92.
Born in Passaic, Mizdol had lived in Wallington and Sebastian, FL before moving to Garfield seven years ago.
She was the co-owner and operator of Mizdol's Tavern in Wallington. She was a parishioner of Sts. Peter & Paul Polish National Catholic Church, Passaic, a founding member of the Hillside S.A.C. Ladies Auxiliary, Wallington, a member of the Wallington V.F.W. Pavlick Koster Post 2640 Ladies Auxiliary, past president of the Polish American Club in Vero Beach, FL, and dearest friend and loyal fan of Jimmy Sturr and his Grammy Award Winning Polka Orchestra.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Emil J."Smokey" Mizdol, and her second husband, Matthew "Lefty" Ziemba.
She was the mother of the Honorable Bonnie J. Mizdol, Bergen County Assignment Judge, and her husband Ronald Zapotosky of Paramus; Patricia Givens and her husband Len, of Troy, MI, and Kathy Skorupka of Wallington.
She was grandmother of four: Jason, and his wife Annemarie, Jody, and her husband Peter, Lisa, and her husband Matt, and the late Ryan, and nine great-grandchildren, and dear sister of the late John Koczwara and Frances Ferber. She was known for her excellent cooking, entertaining, love of Bingo and cards, life-long friendships, and her open door policy.
