GARFIELD, N.J. – Joseph P. Delaney Jr., died Thursday, April 14. He was 83.
A resident of Garfield for more than 60 years, he was born Oct. 6, 1932, in Plymouth, Pa., to the late Joseph and Margaret Delaney. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After the war, he moved to Garfield and married his wife, the late Ann Delaney. He started a family business from the ground up in Garfield, J&W Caterers, which was a part of the community for more than 50 years, upon his retirement.
He took much pride in his business and life in Garfield. He was the recipient of many prestigious awards and honors, including the "Man of the Year" from the Kiwanis Club and the Garfield PBA's Silver Card. He enjoyed nothing more than a cup of coffee and good company whether it be at 20th Century Field, Dunkin' Donuts or outside of his store on a sunny day.
He is survived by seven children, Cynthia "Cindy" Sodora and her husband, Joseph, Noreen O'Reilly and her husband, Kenneth, Joseph "Jody" Delaney III and his wife, Yvette, Eugene "Gene" Delaney and his wife, Darlene, Michael Delaney, Mary Margaret "Maggie" Doyle and her husband, Albert, and Kelly Ann Cochrane and her husband, Robert; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings Ann Chapin, Michael "Jim" Delaney, Margaret "Peggy" Magagna and Bob Delaney; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William "Bill" Delaney.
Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Santangelo Funeral Home, 300 N. Main St., Lodi. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral t 8:30 a.m. Monday at Santangelo Funeral Home, then to Most Holy Name Roman Catholic Church for a 9:30 a.m. funeral Mass. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hanover, Pa.
