GARFIELD, N.J. -- Anthony J. Surace, of Garfield, died on Saturday, June 18. He was 88.
Born in Brooklyn, Surace lived there for 40 years before moving to Garfield 48 years ago. He served in the Army for six years during the Korean War. He worked at Nabisco in Fair Lawn for 30 years, and at the age of 72 he began working at Spencer Savings and Loan in Garfield, and worked there for 10 years.
He was a past commander and life member of the Garfield VFW Post 2867, a parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Garfield and member of the Holy Name Society.
Surace is survived by his daughters, Rose Ann La Vecchia and her husband Rick, and Caroline Surace; siblings Rocco Surace, Rosemarie Cardone, Mary Buchell and Florence Sferlazza; and grandchildren Samantha, Ricky and Nicholas.
He was predeceased by his wife, Helen, and his siblings Daniel and Bruno Surace, Carmela Versace, Theresa Meli, and Gloria Flanagan.
Visiting hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, June 20, at the Aloia Funeral Home, 180 Harrison Ave., in Garfield. The funeral is on Tuesday, arriving at the the funeral home at 10 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. mass at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church, in Garfield. Interment will be at St. Nicholas Cemetery, in Lodi.
