GARFIELD, N.J. -- Members of the Garfield Prevention Coalition recently attended the National Leadership Forum in Virginia.
The forum was sponsored by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, based in Virginia.
The Garfield visitors attended various workshops, heard from guest speakers and spoke with representatives and advocates.
The members intend to bring the lessons from the leadership forum back to Garfield to help their local community.
The Garfield Prevention Coalition includes local volunteers who look for ways to keep the community safe and healthy.
The group has grown out of the Garfield EPIC (Empower Peers & Inspire Change) Youth Coalition created in 2009 focusing on underage issues around alcohol.
Recently there has been increased awareness that Garfield’s youths are using marijuana, tobacco and alcohol at high rates. It was determined that there would need to be a stronger community effort if all these needs are to be addressed.
Its vision is for Garfield to become not only a drug-free community but a culturally aware, deeply bonded community in which its children can grow into happy, healthy and resilient members of the community.
