Matt Basilo was vying to be named Man of the Year by the New Jersey chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Teaneck native and his team set a goal to raise $50,000 for the organization in 10 weeks.

“I am so proud to tell you that my team and I ended up raising over $60,000! And as a whole, our Man & Woman of the Year - New Jersey group raised over $410,000,” Basilo shared.

Basilo and his team were competing against other nominees and their teams to raise the most money to combat blood cancer. The nominee whose team raised the most earned the title.

While Basilo was not named Man of the Year, he was recognized in another way.

He received the Beacon of Hope award, a recognition given to honor the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s former executive director, Stacey Weathers, who passed away in 2015. The award is given to “the candidate that best represents Stacey and what she stood for,” Basilo explained.

Saddle Brook Mayor Robert White said he was proud of Basilo, and thanked all who supported him.

“Thank you to everybody who supported Matt’s efforts, which will ultimately help improve the quality of life of patients and give us hope for a future free of blood cancers,” White said.
