LODI, N.J. — Lodi's Brian Stumpfol received care from his mother while ill and now hopes to return the favor.
Stumpfol's mother, Carol Walters, has a heart condition on top of severe fibromyalgia, bad knees and a rotator cuff in need of surgery.
The combination left her with limited mobility and at times bedridden, Stumpfol said.
It also left her in financial trouble, her son said. Stumpfol, a 1983 graduate of Lodi High School, started an online fundraiser to help his mother's medical bills.
His GoFundMe page raised more than $1,000 as of Thursday night.
"It was great when I went [online] and one friend from school donated $100," he said. "I couldn't believe it."
Stumpfol said his mother's condition seems to be getting worse, as she can barely lift a pot off the stove.
He said that his mother's selflessness helped inspired him.
"She's the kind of person who will go out and do anything for you," he said. "She's the sweetest, nicest person you could meet."
