Members of the community worked together on a project to feed the hungry during the holiday season. The Garfield program extends through the end of December.

Lisa Sokulski, who works in the city manager's office, collected donations along with some of her colleagues in Garfield. A $5 donation could feed a family for a week through the Meals with a Mission foundation.

"I thought it was a wonderful thing," Sokulski said. "When people make donations during the holidays, when you're asking for $10, $20, sometimes people don't have it. What's $5? You pay more when you get a bagel and coffee."

Sokulski said she collected more than $180 herself, enough for at least 37 families.

Patty Belenski, who handles community relations for Meals with a Mission, said they had a good response but could always use more. The foundation feeds people not only in Bergen County but Passaic, Hudson, Union and Essex as well.

"We are continually adding groups to our list," Belenski said. "The more we can get in fundraising the more people we can serve. It's our mission."

TO DONATE: Contact Sokulski 973-340-2000 ext. 4003 or Garfield Sgt. John Lesica at 973-478-8500.
