Garfield Chef Does It All For Holidays

GARFIELD, N.J. — Garfield's Sandy Laux has a difficult decision ahead of her on what to cook for the holidays.

Laux collected over 300 recipes as part of her online cookbook, with many dedicated to holiday themes.

The recipes all follow Italian tradition, Laux said. A 1970 graduate of Garfield High School, Laux said she always enjoyed cooking and wanted to help teach others to do it too.

Eventually people started to reach out to her and say they enjoyed her recipes.

"It was always a variation of the same lament that their ancestors had passed on and the recipes were never written down or had been lost," she said. "I had so many recipes to share and I was actually connecting with people, bringing a bit of joy into their lives, and preserving these wonderful Italian recipes for generations to come."

Laux features several Christmas dishes for breakfast, dinner and dessert. They include an eggs and smoked salmon puff pastry, prime rib, chestnuts and cookies.

Dessert is always the most popular, Laux said.

"I assume people remember them because they were associated with holidays, good times, and special events," she said.

Some of Laux's favorite cooking memories include a mother using one of her recipes for her daughter's wedding, a mom who used her broccoli dish to convince her son to try vegetables, and a family that used a cake recipe to recreate their grandmother's favorite dessert.
