FAIR LAWN, N.J. — Ten years ago, Brandon Higgins was often found riding around Fair Lawn on his skateboard or visiting comic book stores on one of the main roads.

These days, the 23-year-old has great difficulty getting around.

Higgins was treated for a brain tumor in 2013, which left him unable to eat, stand, walk or speak. His mind is still active, but he is unable to care for himself and remains in a wheelchair at home with his family.

In an effort to aid his family and relieve Higgins from the isolation of being homebound, some of Higgins' former teachers from the Memorial School are rallying to get him a wheelchair.

More than $850 had been raised as of Tuesday evening on a YouCaring page for Higgins , and a music and arts festival to support the cause is set for Monday, Dec. 11 (SEE ATTACHMENT BELOW).

As a teen, Higgins was diagnosed with a rare disorder in which iron deposits in parts of the brain, and had lost the ability to speak, walk, use his arms and eat.

Several years later, after not being totally content with the diagnosis, the doctors found tumors in his brain, which doctors believe were the original cause of his decline.

"Along with the daily challenges of life, Brandon must also deal with this daunting isolation, with very few options to lift his spirits," the YouCaring page says .

"Your contribution will provide a life-changing benefit, and provide much-needed encouragement and hope in a very difficult situation."
