SADDLE BROOK, N.J. – New Jersey's nearly 12,000 Walmart associates saw some padding in their recent paycheck, with $1.8 million in bonuses, following strong quarterly sales performances in their stores.

"Investing in our associates is the greatest investment we can make," said Tracy Ferschweiler, market manager for Metro New York and New Jersey.

"We're proud of the tireless work they do for our customers every day. The success of our associates is the success of Walmart."

Across the country, the bonuses totaled $157 million for 850,000 employees. Over the course of the fiscal year, there were $700 million in bonuses, the company said.

Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon thanked the company's workers in a personal message in a March 9 Facebook message.

Just wanted to take a minute to say thank you for an outstanding year, all the hard work you put into serving our customers and members around the world. Well done.

Walmart said that, over the past two years, it's invested billions of dollars in training, education and higher wages, and "these investments offer associates skills, knowledge and tools to help them grow with the company and provide great customer service during a time of rapid change in shopping habits."

During 2016, the company also launched new training programs for associates, supervisors and managers, "preparing them to succeed in a new, technology-enabled age of retail."

The company highlighted these stats from the year so far:

  • promoted more than 200,000 associates, including 3,560 in New Jersey, to jobs with higher pay and more responsibility;
  • converted more than 150,000 associates -- including 2,023 in New Jersey -- from part-time to full-time;
  • more than 75 percent of those in current store management teams started as hourly workers;
  • opened 40 Training Academies, physical facilities that serve as learning hubs for supervisors and managers from approximately 25 area stores

"A job at Walmart means opportunity for associates, no matter their education or work background, and when associates are successful, the company is successful," the company added.
